Finding a job with the State of North Carolina is a process that starts with the completion of the PD 107 form, revised in February 2020. This document, known as the Application for Employment, is your initial step toward potential employment with the state. It requires thorough attention to detail as applicants are urged to answer every question and complete each section accurately. The form is designed to gather comprehensive information from job seekers to ensure the best fit between the applicant's skills, knowledge, and the job requirements. It encompasses various sections that include personal information, eligibility criteria such as work authorization, compliance with military selective service, an equal opportunity information section, and detailed requirements about education and work history. Applicants are encouraged to highlight their competencies clearly and provide specific details about their previous job duties. Additionally, it addresses legal convictions, asks for voluntary declarations concerning disability or veteran status, and even checks preferences regarding the types of work or geographical locations desired. Ensuring accuracy and completeness of the form is critical, as it requests a certification of truthfulness and allows for the verification of all provided information. The State of North Carolina aims to recruit highly qualified individuals committed to serving the public, and this form represents the first step toward evaluating the candidacy of each applicant in a competitive employment landscape.

The state requires specific information to be provided directly on the form to standardize the data collected from all applicants, making it easier to assess and compare qualifications. Although a resume can supplement the application, it cannot replace the detailed work history section on the PD 107 form.

  5. How do I indicate if I have a disability on the PD 107 form?

In the Equal Opportunity Information section of the form, there is a provision to disclose whether you have a disability. This information is voluntary and does not affect the application process but is used to measure the effectiveness of the state's recruitment efforts in reaching diverse segments of the population.

  6. What happens after I submit the PD 107 form?

After submission, your PD 107 form will be reviewed by the hiring department to determine if your qualifications meet the requirements of the job you've applied for. Depending on this assessment, you may be contacted for further steps in the hiring process, such as interviews or skills testing. It's important to ensure the form is accurate and complete, including necessary signatures, as incomplete applications may not be processed.

  7. Where can I find the PD 107 form and instructions for completing it?

The PD 107 form and detailed instructions for completing it can be found on the official website of the State of North Carolina or by visiting a North Carolina Workforce Solutions office. The form includes specific guidelines for each section to aid applicants in providing the necessary information.

Common mistakes

Filling out a PD 107 form for employment with the State of North Carolina is a crucial step in the job application process. However, applicants often make mistakes that can hinder their chances. Here are ten common errors to avoid:

  1. Not answering all questions: Skipping questions, especially those that are marked as required, can lead to an incomplete application, which could disqualify you from consideration.

  2. Ignoring the specificity of the vacancy: Applying for multiple vacancies on a single application diminishes the focused nature of your application. Ensure you apply for one vacancy per application to maintain clarity and relevance.

  3. Overlooking the equal opportunity section: This section is vital for State records and failing to complete it, especially the non-optional parts, can affect the completeness of your application.

  4. Using "see resume" as a response: Not providing detailed information directly on the form and redirecting to a resume does not meet the application requirements.

  5. Failing to list jobs separately: When you've held multiple positions under a single employer, each position and its duties should be detailed separately to accurately represent your experience and skills.

  6. Neglecting to highlight competencies: The failure to specifically showcase your competencies related to the job for which you're applying can make your application look weak compared to others that do.

  7. Providing complete social security numbers: You should only provide the last four digits of your social security number for your privacy and security.

  8. Missing signature and date: An unsigned or undated application is considered incomplete and will not be processed.

  9. Not checking for accuracy: Submitting an application with errors or unverified information can lead to disqualification.

  10. Forgetting to use a continuation sheet: If you need more space, especially for your work history, not using the PD 107-A form can result in leaving out crucial information about your qualifications.

By avoiding these common mistakes and paying close attention to detail, your application will stand a better chance of being considered for the position.

Documents used along the form

When individuals fill out a PD 107 form, aiming to secure employment with the State of North Carolina, several other forms and documents often accompany this application to ensure a comprehensive evaluation of the applicant's credentials and eligibility. These supporting documents each play a crucial role in painting a full picture of the applicant's qualifications, experiences, and suitability for state employment.

  • PD 107-A Continuation Sheet: This is used if you need more space than the PD 107 form provides to detail your work history, education, or other relevant information.
  • Resume: Although the PD 107 form requests that you don't simply state "see resume," a resume can supplement the application by providing a detailed overview of your employment history, skills, and achievements in a format that is familiar to many hiring managers.
  • Cover Letter: A cover letter allows you to introduce yourself and explain why you're interested in a particular position, how your skills make you a good fit, and any other pertinent information that might not be included in the PD 107 form or resume.
  • References List: A separate document listing professional references, including contact information, can be handy for the hiring department to quickly verify your work ethic, skills, and experiences.
  • Educational Transcripts: For positions requiring specific educational qualifications, official or unofficial transcripts can prove that you have the necessary degrees, diplomas, or certificates.
  • Proof of Identity and Work Authorization: These documents are essential to verify your eligibility to be employed in the U.S. They might include a U.S. passport, a Permanent Resident Card, or a work permit along with identity proof.
  • Veteran's Preference Documentation: If claiming veterans' preference, you must submit documentation like a DD-214, service-connected disability evidence, or documentation showing you are the spouse or dependent of a veteran who died from service-related reasons.
  • Licenses or Certifications: Depending on the job, you may need to provide copies of relevant professional licenses or certifications that verify your qualifications for the role you are applying for.
  • Criminal History Disclosure Form: If required, this form discloses any legal convictions in your past. This document helps in determining your suitability for the position, especially if the job involves security or trust.

Together, these documents complement the PD 107 application form, providing a holistic view of an applicant's background, achievements, and capabilities. It's vital for applicants to prepare these documents with care, ensuring they accurately reflect the qualifications and experiences relevant to the job they're pursuing.

Similar forms

  • The Federal Resume bears resemblance to the PD 107 form in its requirement for detailed employment history, including dates of employment, job titles, and descriptions of duties. Candidates must illustrate their qualifications through their work experience, similarly emphasizing competencies and achievements relevant to the job they are applying for.

  • Form I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification, although specifically designed to document that employees are legally authorized to work in the United States, parallels the PD 107 form in terms of verifying eligibility conditions for employment. Both forms necessitate personal identification and work authorization within specific time frames to ensure compliance with employment regulations.

  • The Application for Federal Employment - SF-171 is another document that shares commonalities with the PD 107, especially in collecting detailed personal information, educational background, and employment history. This form also aims to evaluate the applicant's fit and competencies for the federal service, making it a crucial step in the public sector recruitment process.

  • The Volunteer Service Application forms used by many non-profit organizations and government agencies also parallel the PD 107 form, particularly in the sections that solicit an applicant's personal information, availability, work preferences, and previous volunteer or employment history. These similarities underscore the comprehensive nature of background checks and the assessment of skills relevant to both volunteer roles and formal employment positions.

Dos and Don'ts

Filling out the PD 107 form, the official Application for Employment for the state of North Carolina, is a crucial step in your job search within state government positions. Here are some essential do's and don'ts to help guide you through the process:

Do's

  • Answer all questions completely: Unless a question is marked as optional, ensure you provide all the required information.
  • Apply for one vacancy per application: Each application you submit should be for a single job opening. This shows that you are focused and have a particular role in mind.
  • Provide detailed education and work history: Instead of referring to your resume, fill out the sections about your education and previous employment with care. Specific details help in understanding your background better.
  • Highlight your relevant competencies: When describing your work experience, focus on skills, knowledge, abilities, and work behaviors that are pertinent to the job you're applying for.
  • Check your application for accuracy: Before submitting, review your application thoroughly to catch any mistakes or omissions.

Don'ts

  • Overlook signing and dating your application: An unsigned application is incomplete. Ensure you sign and date it as instructed.
  • Submit without checking for errors: Typos and inaccurate information can undermine your professionalism. Take the time to proofread.
  • Ignore the specific instructions for RIF applicants: If you are a Reduction in Force (RIF) applicant with priority, don't forget to check the appropriate box to indicate your status.
  • Provide your entire Social Security Number (SSN): For security reasons, only the last four digits of your SSN are necessary.

Following these guidelines will not only make your application process smoother but also increase the chances of your application being considered favorably. Good luck with your job search!

Misconceptions

When discussing the PD 107 form, specifically designed for State of North Carolina employment applications, several misconceptions often arise. Below are ten common misunderstandings corrected to provide clarity:

  • The PD 107 form is only for first-time applicants. The truth is, whether it's an individual's first or tenth time applying for a state position, they must complete the PD 107 form. This includes applicants who have previously worked for the State of North Carolina and are seeking reemployment.
  • Resumes can replace the work history section of the form. Despite what some believe, stating "see resume" is not acceptable. The PD 107 form requires detailed information about the applicant’s work history to be entered directly into the form to ensure a comprehensive review of the individual's qualifications.
  • You can apply for multiple vacancies with one PD 107 form. Applicants must submit a separate PD 107 form for each job vacancy they're applying for, as each position may have different requirements and qualifications that need to be addressed individually.
  • All sections of the form must be completed. While the form emphasizes the importance of answering all questions, there are sections labeled as optional, such as providing ethnicity information, which applicants can choose not to complete.
  • US citizenship is a requirement for state employment. This often misunderstood policy actually states that the State of North Carolina employs both US citizens and foreigners who can provide proof of identity and work authorization within three working days of employment.
  • Equality Opportunity Information impacts hiring decisions. The Equal Opportunity Information section is designed for demographic analysis purposes only and is not forwarded to hiring managers. Therefore, it does not have an impact on the applicant's prospects for employment.
  • Completing the form guarantees a review by the hiring department. While all applications will be given consideration, due to the volume of applications received, not all applicants will progress to the review phase. Hiring is competitive and based on the qualifications of all candidates.
  • Applicants must list all previous positions together, regardless of the employer. In fact, the PD 107 form instructs individuals to list each job held and duties for those positions separately, especially when one has held multiple positions under a single employer.
  • Convictions disqualify applicants from state employment. Having a conviction does not automatically disqualify an applicant. The nature of the offense and the time elapsed since the conviction are taken into consideration in relation to the job for which one is applying.
  • The social security number is a required field. Applicants are instructed to provide only the last four digits of their social security number, ensuring their privacy and security.

Understanding these facets of the PD 107 form can assist applicants in accurately completing their application, thereby enhancing their employment prospects with the State of North Carolina.
